I Blamed Stress For Years. Turns Out It Was My Morning Latte.

I Stopped Eating Dairy — And Here's What Changed

For a long time I had no idea what was going on. Bloated after lunch. Heavy after a latte. Something always felt off after pizza. I kept telling myself I was just overeating, that my stomach was being sensitive, that I needed to cut back on greasy food.

Turns out it was way simpler than that. And honestly — a little frustrating to figure out so late.

Lactose intolerance.

What It Actually Is

Lactose is the sugar found in milk and dairy products. To digest it, your body needs a specific enzyme called lactase. Some people just don't produce enough of it. When that happens, lactose doesn't get properly broken down — and that's when all the unpleasant stuff kicks in.

Bloating, gas, heaviness, sometimes stomach cramps. Everything I'd been living with for years and blaming on literally anything except dairy.

How I Found Out

Honestly — almost by accident. I decided to cut dairy for two weeks just out of curiosity, after reading about different food experiments. A few days in I realized I felt completely different. My stomach stopped reacting to every single meal. There was a lightness I hadn't felt in a long time.

Then I had ice cream. And everything came back.

That's when it clicked.

What I Changed

I didn't go cold turkey on everything — that felt too extreme and honestly kind of sad. Instead I started figuring out what actually triggered a reaction and what didn't.

Turns out hard cheeses — parmesan, cheddar, gouda — were totally fine. Most of the lactose breaks down during the aging process. Butter was also mostly okay.

But regular milk, soft cheeses, ice cream, and especially lattes? Whole different story.

What Actually Helped

Lactose-free milk — a total game changer. Tastes almost exactly the same and zero issues. Now I can enjoy my morning coffee without dreading what comes next.

Plant-based alternatives. Oat milk in coffee is honestly better than regular milk. Coconut yogurt turned out to be surprisingly good too.

Lactase supplements. Yes, these are a thing. If you know pizza or tiramisu is on the menu, take one beforehand and eat without the aftermath. I don't use them every day but they're a lifesaver at parties and family dinners.

The Important Thing To Know

Lactose intolerance isn't an allergy and it isn't a disease. It's just how some bodies work. And it's incredibly common — somewhere between 30 and 70 percent of adults worldwide deal with it. Most people just never connect their symptoms to dairy.

It's not a life sentence. It's just information about yourself — and once you have it, you can live really comfortably with it.

What I Learned

You don't have to just push through discomfort after every meal. Sometimes you just need to figure out what's actually going on — and find alternatives that work for you.

It took me a little while to get there. But now I eat without anxiety. And my stomach has finally gone quiet.
